Safety Walks

Another important step in the safety strategy is conducting a safety walk.

The WHS legislation requires you to supervise your workers. Supervision isn't just providing or having a supervisor.

Supervision has a qualified or competent worker who is aware of your safe work practices to observe workers undertaking work.

A safety walk is not just looking for poor practice it can be good practice also. A safety walk is observing workers doing the job and praising good work or asking workers to stop work if they are not doing the task as required.

A safety walk is a simple way to observe workers operating safely in the workplace, including retail, construction, and licenced venues to name a few.

A safety walk meets your supervisory requirements under the work health and safety act. A safety walk requires a supervisor to walk around the workplace and review how workers perform tasks. Where possible, we encourage having a junior team member accompany the supervisor so they can learn and see how tasks should be completed.

The supervisor would obtain a copy of a safe work procedure or equipment and observe a worker completing that task. They would then document the outcomes of the observation and discuss this with the worker.

The activity is then reviewed and determined if safe or unsafe. The worker is debriefed, and any action required to improve performance will be documented and reviewed.
